Squonk Opera in “Hand to Hand”
Currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, Pittsburgh’s Squonk Opera is an original progressive rock group that defies categorization. Their new production Hand to Hand features ‘The Squonkers’ as they manipulate enormous puppet hands to tell a spectacular and comic story. In this rock opera melee, giant thumbs detach to become truly opposable and challenge each other with guitars. Featuring original chamber rock music and an opportunity for audience members to come together, Hand to Hand encourages shared discovery and making a community of the imagination.
Squonk has played on 3 continents and in 35 of the United States, for over 1 million people live, and for over 14 million on network TV. The Buffalo News hailed them as “Rust Belt dada” and the Washington Post described them as “Debussy meets Godzilla.” Squonk describes their work as “...often overblown, site-specific and participatory, our work was born from Middle America, places where people like their art boisterous and their food greasy.”
This engagement of Squonk Opera is funded through the Mid Atlantic Tours program of Mid Atlantic Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
