Artpark Carnival
Saturday, august 20, 2022 | 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Mainstage Theater Terrace
Artpark is celebrating its 49th season of expanded, innovative and global programming with a carnival celebrating the world’s revival and renewal.
The main attraction will be a story of the Renaissance giant, Leonardo da Vinci, born of the time of passionate and boundless expectation and striving of an aging epoch thirsting for a new youth. The show built with massive inflatable puppets is preceded by a carnival-inspired by the age of Rabelais’ Gargantua and Pantagruel, the famous giants of the Middle Ages.
Carnival is the feast of time, the feast of becoming, change, and the suspension of all-limitations and prohibitions. Everyone participates because its very idea embraces all the people with a universal spirit.
“Carnival is not a spectacle seen by the people; we live in it.” as it was famously said by M. Bakhtin.
We invite you to take part and celebrate with us.

"LEONARDO DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES"
In the brilliant mind of Leonardo da Vinci, everything was connected -- anatomy, mechanics, drawings of interlacing patterns, bird flight studies, and even the face of his Mona Lisa. His mastery of a wide range of disciplines reminds us of the infinite possibilities of human understanding and that our minds and imaginations are limitless.
“Leonardo wanted to paint the wind. Plasticiens Volants reinvent the master’s fantasies by sculpting the air.”
- Thierry Collin, Plasticiens Volants
In the North American premiere of “Leonardo, Dreams & Nightmares,” Plasticiens Volants returns to Artpark by popular demand to lead us on an all-ages journey into the mind and insatiable curiosity of Leonardo.
Plasticiens Volants is a 46-year-old institution based in Toulouse, France. Their unique street theater performances featuring giant original hand-painted inflatable creations have been seen in more than 23 countries by millions of people. They have performed at countless international festivals, major events such as the Olympic Games in Rio and Sochi and much more. They have also given unforgettable performances at Artpark which hosted their U.S. premieres of “Big Bang” in 2017 and “Pearl” in 2019. Audiences have been eagerly awaiting their return!
