Glenn Miller Orchestra

June 21, 2010

The world-famous Glenn Miller Orchestra makes a triumphant return to Artpark under the baton of renowned trombonist Larry O'Brien after its string of 11 consecutive annual performances came to a brief halt in 2008. Hailed by many as the "Greatest Band of the Greatest Generation," the ensemble will once again swing thru the unforgettable tunes that have made Artpark's Mainstage Theater dance floor a very popular summertime destination, including "In the Mood," "String of Pearls," "Chattanooga Choo Choo," "Moonlight Serenade" and "Tuxedo Junction."

The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful bandleaders back in the Swing Era of the 1930's and '40's. A matchless string of top-selling records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts, and the drawing power at theaters, hotels, and dance pavilions built and sustained Miller's popularity before his tragic death in 1945.

Due to his popularity, the Miller Estate authorized the formation of the present Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956 under the direction of drummer Ray McKinley, who had become the unofficial leader of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn's disappearance. Since then, other leaders have followed McKinley, including clarinetists Buddy DeFranco and Peanuts Huncko, tenor saxophonist Dick Gerhart, trombonists Buddy Morrow and Jimmy Henderson and current bandleader Larry O'Brien.
